State University system website
The California State University is the largest system of senior higher
education in the nation. The 23 campuses and five off campus centers
extend from Arcata, located about 300 miles north of San Francisco, to
San Diego. The oldest campus is San Jose State, founded in 1857, while
the newest is CSU Channel Islands.
The CSU produces 50% more business graduates, computer scientists and
engineers than all other California universities and colleges combined.
CSU also prepares two thirds of the state’s public school teachers
educated in California.
CSU assesses the English and math skills of all entering students for
placement in remedial level or college level English and math classes
using the English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry Level Mathematics
(ELM.) A student who scores a 550 or higher on the SAT I Verbal (or 24
on the English part of the ACT) will be exempt from the EPT and placed
into a college level English class. A student who scores 550 or higher
on the SAT I Mathematics (or 23 on the Math part of the ACT) will be exempt
from ELM and placed into a college level math class. Students who fail
the EPT and/or the ELM test will be placed into remedial English and/or
math class and must complete the class satisfactorily within one academic
year. Students are urged to take the EPT and ELM seriously to prevent
time and money wasting consequences. Visit www.csumentor.edu
or your College/Career Center for more information.
