CALIFORNIA
INDEPENDENT (PRIVATE) COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES
There are 76 private colleges and universities in California, each having
their own unique character and strengths. Over 200,000 students attend
these schools. Approximately 1/4 of California’s undergraduate degrees
are earned by private school students, 1/2 of California’s master’s
and Ph.D degrees, and 3/4 of California’s professional degrees.
Each application is personally reviewed. Mathematical admissions formulas
based upon grades and test scores are not used. Every student is admitted
based upon his or her promise, talents, and achievements. Many schools
offer early decision through an early application. Students who are accepted
early will be notified by December 15.
The classes are usually small and are taught by faculty. Over 125 majors
are offered. Eight out of ten students receive financial aid, based on
academic merit and/or financial need. The average annual financial aid
package for the students totals approximately $15,000. To receive financial
aid, some colleges require a form called the PROFILE others the FAFSA.
Both forms are available in the College/Career Center.

universities are located around the country. They offer a wide range of
programs and choices. There are research universities, comprehensive universities,
small liberal arts colleges, church-related universities and specialized
colleges for the arts or technology. At Tamiscal students may use the
ExPan college search. This program has been installed
on several computers in the main room and in the College/Career Center.
