APPRENTICESHIPS
Apprenticeships are an option for some graduates to learn a skill while
earning a salary. While earning a paycheck, apprentices work with experienced
“journey level workers” to gain skill and knowledge. Apprenticeship
programs combine on-the-job training with relevant classroom instruction.
Most programs require at least 144 hours of instruction per year. Classes
focus on the theory behind the techniques of an occupation.
Currently, over 60,000 apprentices work in California in over 800 occupations.
Most apprenticeships are three to five years. Each program operates under
training standards agreed to by the apprenticeship program sponsor in
accordance with state and federal laws. The local Apprenticeship Committee
(AC) determines the standards of its occupation, including the length
of training and compensation. The general qualifications for participation
in a program are: high school graduation, minimum age of 18 (some are
16), and a qualifying test for some specific apprenticeships. In practically
every skilled job, more than a fundamental knowledge of arithmetic is
essential.
