STUDENT______________________________ COURSE 10310:  ANCIENT LITERATURE and MYTHOLOGY

I. Student Learning Outcomes
All Tamiscal courses share the purpose of helping the student read, write, speak, and solve problems effectively. All courses within the English department are designed to aid the students in developing a higher level of skills in organizing ideas, interpreting and applying what is read, and in learning to express themselves through writing and speaking effectively.

• Students will become aware of artistic, cultural, philosophical and political ideas of Western Civilization.
• Students will understand literary forms and styles established by classical writers.
• Students will understand archetypes in ancient literature and mythology.
• Students will demonstrate their ability to use the writing process effectively. They will work toward using appropriate and precise diction and learn to use correct grammar and mechanics.
• Students will learn to organize a composition, develop a paragraph and paragraph transitions, support generalizations with observations, personal experiences and reading.
• Students will learn to argue positions rationally using logic and evidence to convince other, and to analyze literature in writing using appropriate textual support to defend an interpretation.

• Students will read works of representative authors. This should include drama, epics, poetry, histories and myths.
• Students will write several major critical papers, minor writings as required and watch film versions of the literature, and compare and contrast the cinematic version to the originals.

IV. Assessment
Assignments for this course will include preparation for meeting District Outcome Assessments. For the purposes of evaluation and grading during the course, the following methods may be used: weekly assignments; projects; laboratory work; written reports; presentations; participation; quizzes and exams. Students will be informed of the grading criteria at the beginning of each semester.

Students enrolled in this course will participate in all required District Assessments.

V. Duration
The agreement is effective until the end of the current semester.

VI. Progress Monitoring
Progress will be monitored at weekly meetings; therefore, attendance is required. Missed appointments, tests, and assignments will result in partial course credits and may result in required attendance to Supervised Independent Study (SIS).

Grades and credits will be reported at the quarter and end of the semester.
