INDEPENDENT STUDY COURSE AGREEMENT

STUDENT ____________________________ COURSE 70100: INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS

I. Student Learning Outcomes
All Tamiscal courses share the purpose of helping the student read, write, speak, and solve problems effectively. Introduction to Computers is designed to teach the student to use technology as a tool to access information, analyze/solve problems, and communicate ideas. It is the first course of the computer curriculum. As such, it lays the foundation for students’ technology proficiency and prepares them for the use of computers in high school. Introduction to Computers also begins students’ preparation for collegiate level computer science studies and/or entry level work in the computer industry. The first goal of this course is to prepare students in the basic use of computers. The second goal is to prepare students to be successful using technology in school and in the workplace.

All students will be able to:

Keyboard at 95% accuracy and 25 words per minute.
Word process basic documents including a business letter.
Define and use basic computer concepts and terms.
Differentiate between ethical and unethical use of computers and computer software.

II. Activities
This course uses a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and assignments. A significant amount of time is doing hands-on work on the computer. Students will work independently with individualized instruction as appropriate.

III. Resources
Students will use current software, textbooks and tutorials (both in print and online). In addition to the textbook, students are expected to utilize the internet, email, and other relevant media.

IV. Assessment
Students will be assessed through a variety of means including practice assignments, quizzes and tests and district computer proficiency tests.

Students who pass all 4 tests district computer proficiency tests (keyboarding, word processing software, computer terminology, and presentation software) will receive a B in the class. To receive an A, students must also do a term project.

V. Duration
The agreement is effective until the end of the current semester.

VI. Progress Monitoring
Progress will be monitored at weekly classes; therefore, attendance is required.

Grades and credits will be reported at the quarter and end of the semester.
