Advanced Placement English Literature/Composition 1st Semester - Honors  

I. Student Learning Outcomes
All Tamiscal courses share the purpose of helping the student read, write, speak, and solve problems effectively. All courses within the English department are designed to aid the student in developing to a higher level his skills in organizing his ideas, interpreting and applying what he reads, and in choosing words, punctuation and spellings that will allow him to explain to others his theories and ideas about what he reads and about life.

Students will learn and practice the steps in the writing process. Students will develop vocabulary, identify details, central idea, infer and generalize in reading. Students will read and interpret and analyze works of fiction.

This course is designed specifically as preparation for college courses and the Advanced Placement Test.

II. Activities
In journals, essays and short writings, the students will:

• identify various styles, authors and works of world literature from the major eras studied.
• identify and explain the significance and meaning of specific quotes and pieces of literature studied.
• recognize and demonstrate a relationship between literature and the culture and society in which it exists.
• analyze various works for historical and modern meaning.
• demonstrate a vocabulary of over 700 new words.

III. Resources
- Literature: Heart of Darkness; Song of Solomon; The Awakening; The Sound and the Fury; Hamlet; King Lear; Medea; Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead; Poetry Unit I, including selected poems for analysis.
- Study guides and handouts provided by teacher.
- Online AP practice sites.

IV. Assessment
Grades will be based on essays, quizzes, and tests modeled on the AP exam format.

V. Duration
The agreement is effective until the end of the current semester.

VI. Progress Monitoring
Progress will be monitored weekly by teacher. Students agree that if they fall behind in a course, they will come in to Tamiscal for three two-hour sessions each week until they are caught up.

Grades and credits will be reported three times each semester.
